1621 circa Rare Walter Raleigh Map Ancient Sicily Syracuse Carthage

  

An untitled map of Sicily in the time of Ancient Greece and Rome, with insets of Syracuse and Carthage and beautiful, ornate letter engraving. Syracuse is shown under siege, referring either to the Sicilian Campaign of the Peloponnesian War or its siege during the Second Punic War. The map appeared in Sir Walter Raleigh's work The Historie of the World, first published in 1621. This multivolume work, which was unfinished at the time of Raleigh's execution in 1618, was written during one of his periods of imprisonment in the Tower of London.

It was republished multiple times throughout the 17th century. No engraver is listed, but it was likely engraved by William Hole.

Chips along top and bottom edge. Areas of discoloration, including along centerfold.
